In 1931, in Dhanushkodi of Rameswaram district of Tamil Nadu Dr. Kalam contributed to the development of India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle SLV-3 and the development of missiles like Trishul, Agni, Pruvi etc., as a reputed aeronautical engineer.

 He played a major role in the development of the Center for a major center of space research in India, which helped to develop the country's first indigenous satellite-launch vehicle.

During 1963-82, he served in different capacities of ISRO. In 1982, he included DRDO as a director, and conceived the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP) for five indigenous missiles. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam has set up an advanced technology research center called 'Research Center Emarat' to develop future missile technology sectors. He also served as Defense Minister and later as the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. After retirement, Dr. Kalam joined Annamalai University till he became president in January 2002.

He is a member of Indian National Academy of Sciences, Astronautical Society of India and many other professional bodies. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was conferred with Padma Bhushan in 1981, Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and India's highest civilian award, 'Bharat Ratna' in 1997. Among other prestigious awards, Dr. Birin Roy Space Award, Om Prakash Basin Award for Science and Technology, National Nehru Award, Arya Bhatta Award etc. Dr. Kalam was awarded the Doctor of Science (D.ScOnoris-Kausa) degree by twenty eight universities.

Dr. Kalam, a graduate is a multiplier of classical Carnatic music. He plays the harp in his leisure. He writes poetry in Tamil, his mother tongue. Seventeen of his poems were translated into English and in 1994 it was published in the form of 'My Journey'.

He reads the Koran and the Bhagavad Gita with equal devotion. He is also the author of 'India 2020: The New Vision for the New Millennium' (YS Rajan along with 1998), 'Wings of Fire: A Autobiography' and 'Ignited Minds - Freeing Power Within India' books.

Dedicated to the country, Dr. Abdul Kalam's vision is to transform India into a developed nation by 2020 through hard work and perseverance. He holds the first world dream for the Third World Nations.
